Nespresso X Pantone: The Ultimate Summer Collaboration

The Nespresso x Pantone collaboration is inspired by the vibrant culture and scenery of the Mediterranean, particularly the glamorous and vintage essence of the 1970s. This exclusive collection, curated by the Pantone Color Institute, features a range of products such as coasters and travel mugs designed with bright, vivid colours reminiscent of the Mediterranean's sparkling aqua sea, warm sandy shores, and sun-ripened fruits. The collection's centrepiece is the colour "Mandarin Orange," which celebrates the region's beauty and diversity, aiming to evoke the experience of an unforgettable Mediterranean summer with every coffee moment.

Designers can draw several graphic tips and inspiration from the Nespresso x Pantone collaboration. We’ve gathered everything we can learn from this summer campaign!

Colour Palette:

Mandarin Orange: Used as the primary colour, reflecting the central theme of the collection.

Bright, Vivid Colors: Incorporate colours reminiscent of the Mediterranean, such as sparkling aqua, golden yellows, sandy beiges, and the rich hues of sun-ripened fruits.

Contrast and Complement: Pair bold, bright colours with softer, complementary tones to create a visually striking yet balanced palette.

1970s Glamour:

This visual thematic Integrates elements that evoke the glamorous essence of the 1970s, such as retro patterns, sleek lines, and vintage-inspired typography. All these were implemented with the Mediterranean scenery, with the use of imagery and patterns that were reminiscent and recognisable relevant to the Mediterranean landscape, including sea, beaches and lush greenery. The elements of sun and light were also heavily utilised to emphasise warm, radiant light effects that mimicked the Mediterranean sun, enhancing the overall summery feel.

Textures and Patterns:

Natural Textures were incorporated that were reminiscent of natural elements like sandy shores, rocky coastlines, and fruit skins, along with retro patterns that reflected the 70s era, such as geometric shapes, floral designs, and bold, repetitive motifs.

Product Design Elements:

Functional aesthetics are a must for any designer at any concept creation, in order to ensure that the design elements selected will enhance the usability and aesthetic appeal of products, in this case, coasters and travel mugs. Transportive imagery also creates the feeling of being transported to a Mediterranean summer through scenic illustrations or photographic elements.

Visual Storytelling

Narrative Integration:

The collaboration weaved together a story through the design elements that encapsulated the journey to a Mediterranean paradise, from morning sunrises to evening sunsets. Through the highlighting of cultural touchstones from the Mediterranean, such as traditional patterns, local flora, and iconic landmarks, they were able to create visually cohesive and appealing products that capture the essence of an unforgettable Mediterranean summer.

Brand Identity:

A well-defined colour palette can be the driving factor behind crafting an original and consistent visual identity, which eventually can be super crucial for brand recognition and differentiation from competitors.

Emotional Impact:

Different colours evoke different emotions and moods. For example, warm colours like red and orange can create excitement or warmth, while cool colours like blue and green can be calming or refreshing. Colours can have varying meanings in different cultures, and a thoughtful palette can resonate better with the target audience, which is an important component to take into consideration when crafting and formulating a visual identity.

Consumer Behaviour:

Colours can influence purchasing decisions. For instance, certain colours can induce a sense of urgency (red for sales) or trust (blue for financial services). It has also been proven multiple times and ways that the consistent use of colour can build brand loyalty as customers start associating specific colours with a brand’s identity and values.

In summary, the colour palette is a fundamental aspect of graphic design that affects brand identity, emotional impact, visual hierarchy, aesthetic appeal, functionality, and marketing effectiveness. Choosing the right colours is essential for creating designs that are not only visually appealing but also effective in communicating the intended message and engaging the target audience, as effectively and expertly showcased in the ultimate summer collaboration between Nespresso and Pantone.
