The Animation Process

Written by Jenny Zaragka | Jul 30, 2020

How long does it take for a creative team to bring your idea to life?

Well, unfortunately not just a day. It can take from 6 weeks to even years, depending on the production.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how the creative process of an animation works, so you’ll have a clear idea of what it truly means and how many professionals are actually involved.

Briefing

Most probably this is the most important part of each project. This is your chance to help the designers better understand the concept, what you’re trying to achieve and in general clearly share your vision.

Also, this is the part where you need to share any stylistic preferences in order to have a clear direction.

A detailed brief will take around 3-6 days to complete.

Brainstorming

After the creative team has a full understanding of the concept, brainstorming follows. The process begins with copywriters and directors who will create the general structure and choose the stylistics.

Once the designers have the first ideas, will work to bring different artistic options and features that can work well with them in order to bring to life the client’s vision.

In order to gather everything and create various relevant options will take 2-3 days.

Script Writing

Following the brainstorming sessions, here comes the script. This is the Alpha and Omega of the whole project.

The script will have to be detailed enough to give the opportunity to the designers to visualize the final result and make the most out of it.

The copywriter will have to make sure that the message is communicated loud and clear and that the storyline is interesting and unique.

This procedure will take 2-3 days.

Voice Over

At this point, the voice over will need to be recorded.

It is very important to have the final voice-over at an early stage since it affects the length and the flow of the animation.

The storyboard artists will later on work based on the voice-over to achieve perfect synchronization and avoid awkward silent moments.

The recording will take 2-3 days depending on the length of the animation.

Initial Sketches

After the script is finalized and approved, the team start working to create the initial sketches before proceeding with the final illustrations.

Illustrators and directors will work together to make sure that the project is in the right path and that it has a unified look and feel. All the designers should be at the same page in order to come up with a great outcome.

This part of the project takes around 1-3 days to complete, again depending on how large the project is.

Storyboard

When the whole team is aligned and ready to begin, the creation of the storyboard begins.

The storyboard allows the team and the client to see the overall structure of the final product in detail.

The progression of the story at this stage should be very clear and everyone should be able to visualize the final animation.

To finalize a detailed storyboard it will take 1-5 days.

Illustration

At this point, illustrators will be on fire. They will have to turn all the sketches into the final characters and elements ready to be animated and you will be able to see your vision come to life.

This process will take 5-12 days depending on the complexity of the style chosen.

Animation

This is the final and the most time-consuming part of the project.

All the earlier stages, mainly storyboards and illustrations, will now be used to create the final outcome.

The animators will have to achieve natural movement scene by scene, and make sure that all scenes run smoothly.

It can take between 5-15 days.

Sound Design

After the animation part is completed the sound design will follow.

Sound effects and background music will be added to bring out the right mood to the target audience.

Sound design can be completed in 1-3 days.

With all the steps being completed, you’ll have an extraordinary experience watching your idea finally come to life!
